Your assurance of professional expertise
Since the legal obligation for real estate agents to be sworn in was abolished in the Netherlands, anyone can now call themselves a real estate agent or appraiser. This is a risky development, especially considering the financial stakes involved in buying or selling property. To ensure professional standards, the VastgoedCert Foundation was established in 2004. It maintains a national registry of certified real estate professionals based on proven competence.
Certification process
The VastgoedCert registry is divided into four expert chambers:
- Residential Real Estate (Wonen)
- Commercial Real Estate (Bedrijfsmatig Vastgoed)
- Rural Real Estate (Landelijk Vastgoed)
- Property Valuation (WOZ)
To gain certification in one or more of these fields, candidates must pass a general theory exam, as well as specialized theoretical and practical exams for each chamber. Only upon successful completion and certification can they be listed in the official VastgoedCert register.
Ongoing professional development
Registered professionals must re-certify every four years to prove that their knowledge is up to date. This requirement represents an improvement over earlier practices, where continuing education was often lacking.
How to recognize a qualified agent
Certified residential real estate agents carry the title RM (Register-Makelaar). Certified experts in commercial, rural, or property valuation fields hold the title RT (Register-Taxateur).
