The quayside Oude Zijde and quayside Nieuwe Zijde
Living on the quayside has its challenges, especially if you want to find a suitable home within the Red Light District. If you don’t mind having to deal with tourists every single day, you’ll love living in one of the houses there. At the same time it is also one of the oldest pieces of Amsterdam, which makes it necessary to do a thorough check on the structural state when you think of buying a house here.
The ring of canals
Within the area that is bordered by the Prinsengracht and Dam you find yourself directly in the heart of the city, with hotspots like the Museumplein, PC Hooftstraat and the Leidseplein all within walking distance. Nothing beats living next to an Amsterdam canal, unless you go for free parking of course.
Jordaan
Famous and one of the oldest boroughs of Amsterdam, located between the Prinsengracht, Brouwersgracht, Singelgracht and Leidsegracht. Originally a real working class district, but in recent years the Jordaan has shown signs of rejuvenation. These days you come across a lot of single households in the Jordaan. When you look at the percentages, in the Jordaan there is far more rented housing (around 70%) than there are owner occupied homes (30%).
The Nieuwmarktbuurt
One of the most well known neighbourhoods of Amsterdam, located around the Nieuwmarkt and the Waag. It has a lot of authentic houses built in the 18th and 19th century and is also known to be located close to Amsterdam Central Station and Chinatown.
Haarlemmerbuurt
Possibly the cosiest neighbourhood of the city and certainly a part of town with an incredible number of small shops and bars. On the Haarlemmerdijk you’ll find numerous smaller apartments from the 17th and 18th century. A lot of these houses (around 400) are qualified as national monument and are built on a ground lease.
Oostelijk Havengebied
Java eiland, KNSM eiland, de Rietlanden, Sporenburg, Borneo en Cruquiuseiland. All very popular places to live, as they all have modern buildings alternated with renovated houses. Some islands are designed by internationally famous architects. Here you’ll find beautiful city apartments with a majestic view over the IJ river.
Westelijke and Oostelijke Eilanden
The Westelijke eilanden were developed in the 17th century and consist of the Bickerseiland and Prinseneiland. This city district is known for its renovated warehouses, countless beautiful shaped bridges and numerous houseboats. Living in this area is popular, because the warehouses provide a lot of space. Not surprisingly, ground lease is also an issue here. Close to the Scheepvaartmuseum you’ll find the Oostelijke Eilanden with well known names as Kattenburg, Wittenburg and Oostenburg.
Plantagebuurt
Famous for Artis and the Hortus, the Plantagebuurt is a green borough with numerous beautiful houses from the 17th and 18th century.
Planciusbuurt
Popular neighbourhood with renovated workers’ houses. The Haarlemmerbuurt is only a short walk away. You can find a lot of rental houses from housing corporations here.
Weteringschans
The Weteringschans connects the Leidseplein to the Frederiksplein. Concert venue Paradiso and numerous Amsterdam hotspots can be found there. Besides spacious apartments you’ll also find a number of beautiful villa’s (many of them are reconstructed to accommodate offices).
Recreation in Amsterdam Centrum
The centre of Amsterdam has a high diversity of cultural entertainment, from museums to concert venues and of course a number of movie theatres. Recreation in Amsterdam Centrum means a little boat trip through the canals, a nice stroll through the Vondelpark or relaxing on one of the thousand terraces you will find in the centre of the city. You can reach everything by foot. That’s the main advantage of living in the centre, unlike city districts IJburg or Zuidoost for example. If you love true city life, than there is no place like the centre of beautiful Amsterdam.
